Peasant Woman Memory

I'm lying on the ground. The sun is bright and warm. My head is propped up and I have my knees bent up. I'm sitting in a field where everything is dry and gold colored. I'm dressed in the grey cavalry pants and my usual boots. No hat. I'm using a coat as a pillow. I think I'm wearing a light colored button up vest? There is a picture of me with Kurt Wolff that comes to mind. The grass or wheat? is about two feet high and I'm somewhat hidden. The sun feels so good and warm. Someone else is in the field. I can hear them walking. I'm not sure whether I want to be found or not. Curiosity gets the best of me and I peer around.

There is a tall tree with green foliage about 200 yards ahead and to the left. A road is near the tree. The sky is blue all around. To my right is a row of thick trees enough to make a shaded area. There are not enough hills in this place. It seems flat. There is a peasant woman to my left. She was carrying something under her left arm and balancing a bundle on her head? She has dark eyes and skin that has seen the outdoors often. I don't think she was expecting to see me. Her blouse sleeves are rolled up and she is wearing dark colored clothes.

She stops and stares at me in fright or apprehension. I'm not in uniform, but I look like a Prussian. She is not German. I don't see any reason to bother her and I lie back down and listen to hear her footsteps. I hear nothing at first, and then she walks cautiously behind me and towards the row of trees to my right. I peer up at her and she is continuing on her way without looking back. I lie down again and relax. I go back to tearing apart bits and pieces of grass or wheat seed.
