Der Leutnant's Memories

Talk with Manfred

Manfred and I are walking away from the hangars and I'm getting lectured about my improper behaviour.  It is near dusk, and I have the impression that some important people were visiting during the afternoon.  I apparently upset someone who was in a position of power.  Manfred tells me not to be so outspoken in front of these people.  He tells me that he agrees with what I said.  I tell him that I'm so frustrated.

I feel that they don't care if we live or die. They give us aircraft with wings that fall off and tell us to do the impossible, and they expect us to say yes sir and gladly die in order that they can sit in their safe homes far from the front, with servants catering to their every needs. My family on the other hand is trying to make ends meet and they frequently go hungry, due to the war.

I feel betrayed that these so called men are getting fat while while the people are starving and getting killed.  I run up to a tree and punch it as hard as I can out of frustration.  Manfred puts his arm on my shoulder and tells me he understands how I feel, but there was nothing we could do about "his" death.  They are working on it.  The war will be over soon, and everything will be back to how it was before.  He hands me a cloth to wrap my bleeding hand in and we walk back.

On a side note I have the feeling that it was Festner that died.
