The Assault

A barrage started in the early morning (around 2 or 3 am?). Just before dawn, we crawl through the mud, behind the barrage, until we are about 20 feet away from a fortress. The barrage stops just at dawn. I pull out a grenade and craw closer to the fortified position and I lob the grenade through an opening in the stone. I hear screams as the detonation rings in my ears.

We crawl inside and start the grizzly task of clearing out any survivors. Eventually we had to retreat, since there were too many enemy reinforcements arriving and we became outnumbered fast.
