Karl Allmenroder's Memories

Memories of Kurt Wolff

"Kurt and I joined Jasta 11 about the same time, and we were both inexperienced.  He was easy to talk to and easy going.  Everyone liked Kurt.  He accepted people without reservation, and was concerned about all of us.  We looked out for each other. Prior to his transfer from Jasta 11 to leader of Jasta 29, Kurt came to visit with me in the evening for the last time (May 1917).

He expressed his concerns about the transfer, but mainly because we knew we wouldn't be there to watch out for each other any more.  We would often talk together of flying strategies, but also about our families and what we wanted to do after the war.  We sat before the fire this evening- Kurt slouched in the chair and said our unspoken goodbye.  I never saw him again after that and I missed him after he was transferred."
