Karl Allmenroder's Memories

Memory of going home

"I am looking in through the window from the back of our house in Wald.  I can see the table set for tea with blue and yellow crockery. (It is quite gaudy by today's standards).  There is nobody in the room.  The table is pushed against the wall in a manner quite unusual.  I remember thinking, "How can we eat with the table against the wall like that." I am quite puzzled."Aren't they expecting me," I think. "Why aren't they here to greet me..?" Then I understand, slowly, painfully.  My mother has set the table for tea and then gone out. The house is empty.  The table is set for the mourners who have gone to my funeral. It is pushed off to the side to allow more people in the room.  I am filled with an emptiness now that I can't contain."
