Catching a Ride

I am going home on leave. I must be only 18 or 19 because I know it is before I became a pilot.  It is cold and there is frost on the ground and trees. I am walking down a deserted road with woods on both sides. I'm in uniform. I feel like I am trying to get home and still have a long way to go.

A couple pulls over to give me a lift in their car. I climb into the back, and am examining the upholstery of the car. I'm tired, and in a dazed state.  Although I am anxious to get home, my emotions feel detached from me (I feel numb).

I'm thinking of the irony of my situation. Here I am sitting in the back of a car with strangers. Because I am in uniform they feel safe giving me a lift. Yet I am trained to kill. I not feeling good about myself...
