Awake at night
Lying awake, I remember
And its suddenly strange
To find not a soul
In voice's range
It doesn't seem so long ago
My bedroom's space ran to and fro
With comrades sleeping, a snoring ditch
Where could be heard every groan and itch
Where mug and canister strew the way,
Where walls were sand-bags, floors were clay;
Inhabitants stretched from left to right
And softly sang throughout the night
Yet one day they left and ne'er came back
My bedroom lost to hist'ry's track –
Those men I heard through sentry's night…
A coldness spreads though sun is bright
Now they lie too
Where once 't was strange
To find so many
In voice's range
