Faint memory of being outside during the day in the snow in front of my families large white or very light grey house. There is about 6 inches of snow on the ground. We are playing in the snow. Standing. I would guess that I am about twelve years old? It is mid morning and I get the impression that my brother, sister and I are waiting to go someplace because we are dressed nicely. We are not supposed to get wet or dirty. We are waiting for Mama and Papa and our youngest brother, who is just a toddler.
I eye my other younger brother, Lothar, who is almost the same size as I am. He's holding a snowball and I am toying with some snow also. We eye each other. I know he is up to something. He and I were always double trouble when we were together. He starts to gently toss his up and down in the air as if to pretend to be innocent. Then we hear Elza start to give us that, "You'd better not or else you're gonna get in trouble" speech.
He and I eye each other once again after Elza's little speech. We smile at each other and toss the snowballs at her. One hits her and she squeals and stamps her feet angrily at us. I can see where the snow has stuck to the front of her long dark wool coat. We laugh at her and she indignantly stomps past us to go complain to Mama and Pap. Suddenly, Lothar and I give chase to her and start to apologize and convince her that she doesn't want to tell. I brush the snow off the front of her coat. She seems calmer, and Lothar and I look relieved and smile triumphantly at each other. This all happened in the front garden area of our house.
