Younger Cousin Notes from email with Private Jamie:

You know the idea of a cousin....seems to feel right.  A boy about five or six years old.  Really blonde hair.  The hair is not long, but it's not super short either.  His hair is thin.  Pale complexion.  It's as if I see this child on a sunny day runny through a field of tall grass.  It's near the noon hour when the sun is high.  He's wearing something that doesn't seem right.  He looks like he is wearing overalls.  I didn't think European children wore overalls.  Is there some piece of clothing that may give an appearance of being overall like?  He's wearing a white short sleeve shirt.  Maybe he's wearing one of those sailor shirts?  Not sure.  He's a cute little thing.  Very playful and innocent.  I don't get the impression of a child that is annoying or troublesome.  Does he get killed by an accident involving a vehicle of some sorts?...... a wagon or something moving suddenly and fast?  What am I picking up?   I see him lying on the ground face down in a strange position.  As if he got hit in the face and it turn his body to the right and he spun about quickly and hit the ground.  He is lying on grey gravel.  It seems to be the same sunny day.  He came down a grassy hillside running and the driver did not see him coming down.  The child has blood on his face and the driver stops and is talking with me.  I must have followed the child.  I think I pick him up and we take him in the cart.  He's not dead.  He's unconscious and needs medical attention.  The driver is an older man with a strange accident and he's really upset and keeps saying that he didn't see him.  I seem to have absolutely no emotions at all.  As if I turned all my feelings off.  Perhaps I am in shock.

And yes, the cart hit him hard.  It was near the right front corner of the wagon.  The little boy was all wound up and having fun.  We were running on a hillside that had a winding roadway.  The cart was going downhill and around a corner.  I think it was pulled by two horses.  The driver wore a light colored hat with a dark blue band that had seen a lot of use.  He had a mustache and was just beside himself about what had happened.  And yes, the impression was that we thought he should live, but I think he died a few days later.  It may have been a severe concussion.

Private Jamie's recollection:

Yes,  (Eidel) she was around the same age as you - perhaps a tiny bit older (not even a full year, maybe?)...I'm trying to think how to describe her...She was a lot like you but...lighter in nature? I don't mean less intelligent but not quite as deep thinking a lot of the time? She smiled a lot and when she truly did so, it lit up a room? You always seemed to get on well with her; it was sometimes as if she knew what you were thinking or were about to do.  I enjoyed being with both of you as you were more fun than Johann! I think i liked your Father too..I found him firm but very fair in his judgements of anything.

Well, well, well ! It seems we knew each other again! : ) Its funny, i keep thinking my name should have been Thomas or Tomas but Wilhelm and Wolfgang came to mind first..Perhaps one was my real first name and the other my middle name but for some reason the family used that instead..There was an older relative with the same name, (an uncle?) and they didn't want there to be confusion?

Private Jamie's Recollection:

I think the name was Tobias Wilhelm Wolfgang, rather than the other way round but i'm not able to dredge up any surnames either! I don't think we had the same, which would suggest that you're right and i was your cousin on your Mother's side, by her sister..Started with 'Von Mol...' or Von Mul' or something begining with 'Tr' - strong, almost severe sounding names...

Yes, i recall your Father well but not your Mother. She doesn't seem to have been around in my memories much.  I suppose she was probably in another room with my mother, her sister chatting or whatever whilst i 'hung around' you lot (as Johann put it)   She is a distant sort of figure while i often saw your father as he came in from somewhere or left on some kind of business and just paused to acknowledge me with something like "Hello, Young ?  , what've you been up to today? Driving your cousins mad!?"  Could your Mother be strict if she wished - it didn't happen often but you knew when she was annoyed with you?

Your and Eidel's link was just as you said, almost as if you were stereotypical twins who can read each others minds rather than just being born within a ten or 11 months of each other..I used to quite envy that as i either had no siblings or they were much older, grown up...

When you mentioned that you envision my father greeting you as a youngster and kindly chatting with you, I can see that in the front entrance turret room - the one with all the windows facing south and all the bright sunlight that would come in during the afternoon.  I should finish drawing up what I recall as the layout of the house and show those to you.  I see you, the blonde little body sitting on the wooden floor right in the way of going down the hall and you have a perfect view of the front door.  The whole house middle floor area seems to be painted a bright saffron yellow.  It makes this section of the house seem very cheery, and all the furniture looks good with it.  I wonder if your father was in the military and that your mother got lonely and would stay with us for company while he was away.

Notes on Siegfried's bedroom - email with Private Jamie:

Yes, my room generally was cool and comfortable.  I am trying to remember what part of the house it was on.  I get the impression that there were trees outside of my windows so it would have been on the side of the house that faced the hillside.  That would have also meant.....  it was just up and the left of the dinning room's patio exit.  I can look down to the right and see the outdoor patio where wrought iron tables and chairs are place.  My room was very peaceful.  And yes, I recall it always being very neat and orderly.

The bathroom that I described only had a toilet and wash basin.  The bath tub was located in a larger room down the hallway.  That room had a stone floor, which could be slippery when wet, but was also easier to clean up if a mess was made.  There was a big window that faced west in the Bath Tub room.  I don't recall if we had hot water piped into that room yet or if we still had to do something special for baths.  The house was old and had been slowly upgraded throughout the centuries.  I think it was originally some kind of fortress or small castle type structure.

Private Jamie's recollection:

The description of the furniture feels right (and, what i remember, now i recall being your cousin! : )))) You took me in there at least once to show me something - my mind says a place on a world globe that i'd shown an interest in, or that your studies had looked at...hmm, were you trying to explain to me about how not all countries and continents were joined together, since i thought they  were, as our country was?  The only thing i don't recall is the bathroom  - but maybe it wasn't as i'd think of one- perhaps it just had a wash stand and so on, not a bath tub of any kind?

Your room always was neat, except once, i think, when you got very angry with someone (johann again?) and messed it up a bit...You and johann seemed to disagree a lot over girls, though whether it was over particular females or just what a male's conduct should be with them, i don't know - i wasn't really old enough to take much notice.  Was your room usually quite dim and cool in the day time unless the weather was muggy due to where it was in the building?

 Private Jamie Recollection:

i think i remember the toy very briefly - i saw it once but was not allowed to play with it and would have been much too small to do so. Was it a soldier with a black hat (maybe something on it in yellow) and a red jacket - and a moustache that was almost like the one Kaiser Wilhem II eventually had? It looked quite heavy for the size of child it was intended for? It was hanging on a hook or something when i saw it, in an old nursery  room or the sitting room us children used most?

Your mother was fair haired, i do recall that much of her - Was it kind of...frizzy? Not curly but not..flat either? The little that i do picture her, i always see her in whate looks like a yellowy dress, but the image is very hazy as memories often are from a small child.

The armour in the older part of the house sounds familiar too - i think it fascinated me but slightly scared me at the same time! I feel i can hear someone, an adult telling another adult one of the suits probably 'dated from the time of Maximillian' - but i can't hear the rest of the conversation. i don't think i was meant to be there just then and was peeping from behind something near the doorway - a big dark (navy or black with gold braid edging?) curtain?
